We are honored and extremely happy that Professor Barry J. Marshall, 2005 Nobel Laureat, will attend this meeting as our honorary lecturer.

This symposium will provide an update in surgical pathology of the gastrointestinal tract, with particular emphasis on its central role in the management of patients with gastrointestinal diseases. Discussions by clinicians on the importance of GI pathology in formulating local and systemic treatment plans will complement lectures provided by expert GI pathologists. In addition, the emerging role of molecular biology in the classification and management of GI tumors will be presented and discussed.

Our faculty represents the ”cutting edge” in knowledge in this field and there will be ample time for questions and discussion.

The participants will be able to disseminate the course content to colleagues “back home” since all lectures will be recorded and made available on a DVD together with fully synchronized PowerPoint slides shown in original quality (the DVD with the whole program content is included in the registration fee).

A case seminar based on slides accessible by virtual microscopy on the Internet before the course start is included and the participant with the best results - according to supposed correct diagnoses - will receive a “golden” prize.

The participants will have the opportunity to informally consult faculty members about their difficult or interesting cases.

Handouts with high quality color prints of all presented lecture slides (approximately 1.700 PowerPoint slides) are included in the course fee, as well as coffee/tea and lunches.

It is with great pleasure that we welcome you to attend this symposium and experience the charming and beautiful city of Stockholm, the Royal Capital of Sweden. Stockholm is built on 14 islands with well-preserved medieval buildings standing alongside modern architecture and with an exciting archipelago of 24, 000 islands.

The Stockholm City Hall

The Stockholm Royal Palace

The participants have been invited by the Stockholm City Council and the Stockholm County Council to a Reception at the Stockholm City Hall (Thursday), the very building where the annual Nobel dinner and festivities take place. An interesting and highly appreciated event with Swedish delicatessen and drinks followed by a guided tour of the building.

The first evening, August 30, there will be a dinner party with entertainment at the famous Grand Hotel (included in the registration fee). We will have a drink in the Grand Hotels STRÖMSALONGERNA (see below) - where you have a wonderful view of water, boats and the Stockholm Palace - followed by a three course gourmet dinner in the magnificent SPEGELSALEN (see below) with some entertainment.

STRÖMSALONGERNA: Strömsalongerna is just next to Spegelsalen. The suite of rooms was built in the mid-1920s to create a more elegant entrance to Spegelsalen. Here, conference-goers can meet and mingle in a more intimate environment before the main presentation, after which two large sliding doors are opened to reveal the magnificent Spegelsalen (see below). Strömsalongerna's strict classicism and minimalist style contrast with the opulent grandeur of Spegelsalen, but together they form a fantastic entertainment space.

SPEGELSALEN: Spegelsalen, the "Hall of Mirrors", is a magnificent ballroom decorated in gold, white and red. Ever since the opening in 1899, it has been the scene of countless successful conferences and brilliant parties. Spegelsalen was inspired by its namesake, the Galerie des Glaces in Versailles. The room has four large mirror doors on either side, beautiful ceiling paintings and two giant chandeliers with gold-coated arms. Spegelsalen is now regarded as a part of Sweden's cultural heritage. It has no equivalent anywhere else in Sweden. It was in this room that the first Nobel Prize ceremony and banquet took place in 1901. It was a successful evening, and the event continued to be organized here up until 1929, when the Nobel Foundation decided to move the banquet to the newly built Stockholm City Hall. Still today, the Laureates and their families stay at the Grand HÙtel in connection with the event.

The symposium will be held in the building occupied by the Swedish Society of Medicine, Klara Ostra Kyrkogata 10. The building, which has served as a meeting place for doctors and members since 1906, is centrally located and close to excellent restaurants, hotels, and shopping.

This meeting offers a unique opportunity to combine high-class science with interesting social activities at a time of the year when Stockholm is showing its full beauty!

Welcome to Stockholm and a wonderful experience!
